The first school, built in 1882, was a 30’x 40′ plank building and stood at the corner of East Street and San Gabriel Road. Mr. Rudolph Bertram contributed $50 toward its construction. It also served as a church and Masonic Lodge.

Rudolph Bertram established the town of Bertram, originally a square block of forty acres bounded by North, South, East, and West Streets. These streets still exist today. Bertram grew rapidly and became an important trade and shipping center.
