1st Annual City Wide Garage Sale
Folks in Bertram like to celebrate life and the accomplishments of our citizens, especially our youth. Throughout the year we hold various celebrations and events – some a little wacky, and some serious. No matter what the occasion, the important thing is that we come together and do this as a community – those that have lived here their whole lives and those that are new to the area. All are embraced and encouraged to participate!
Burnet County Livestock Show
Each January many of our 4-H and FFA youth participate in the Burnet County Livestock Show. The Bertram Buying Committee is instrumental in collecting money to purchase the animals these kids worked so hard to raise.
In Bertram we celebrate Donkey Day on February 2. If our national award winning miniature donkey Pawnee eats his oats, then we’re sure to have an early spring!
Community Clean-up Days
In spring and fall, the Bertram Chamber of Commerce spearheads Community Clean-up Days in conjunction with the City’s bulk trash weekends. Watch for upcoming dates on our calendar. (calendar)
Easter Egg Hunt
Each year Bertram has an Easter Egg Hunt at the Roadside Park on the Saturday before Easter. The free event is sponsored by Farmers State Bank and Bertram American Legion Post 607, with support from local businesses and the Chamber of Commerce.
Each spring area churches come together for Crop Walk, which supports our local food pantry.
Each Mother’s Day weekend the Austin Cycle Association http://www.austincycling.org/ holds their Armadillo Hill Country Bicycle Ride, and the Bertram Chamber hosts a rest stop for them at the Roadside Park. The park is also the starting point for the Kid’s Ride.
City-wide Garage Sale
The Friends of the Bertram Free Library sponsor a City-wide Garage Sale each spring at the Pavilion on 243, near the baseball fields. This is a great opportunity to sell your goods in the comfort of the spacious covered pavilion. Booth rental and food sale proceeds go to the new library building fund. Check the calendar for the next sale. (calendar)
Summer Reading programs
Each June the Bertram Free Library hosts their free Summer Reading programs on Thursdays at 10:30. There is a different program each week, and one of the high spots of the month is a story enacted by the legendary Storybook Grannies. A good time is had by all!
Each year at the end of June, the Austin Steam Train Association holds its annual Railfair Festival. ASTA brings several special trains through Bertram at that time, and passengers enjoy visiting Bertram’s historic depot. The train stops in Bertram on the weekends all through the summer, and it also brings passengers to Bertram’s Oatmeal Festival and Olde Tyme Christmas Festival. For information on train rides, see www.austinsteamtrain.org
Fire Department fireworks
On July 4th the Bertram Volunteer Fire Department holds a giant fireworks display at Bertram’s baseball fields. Funds for the fireworks are donated by businesses and individuals.
Back to School Luncheon
In August we honor our teachers with a Back to School Luncheon, sponsored by Farmers State bank with additional donations from local businesses and the Chamber of Commerce. Bertram has a wonderful elementary school, which was named a Blue Ribbon School in 2007. Our teachers are excellent and they have great support from the community. Pictured here is new 2008 staff.
Bertram’s famous Oatmeal Festival is held each year on the Friday and Saturday before Labor Day. (Oatmeal Festival)
Souper Supper Fundraiser
Each fall, in September or October, the Friends of the Bertram Free Library hold a Souper Supper Fundraiser benefiting the New Library Building Fund. There is generally another supper in late winter or early spring. The whole community comes together to enjoy a soup and dessert supper and an auction to raise money for a much needed larger library.
Main Street Halloween
Each year on Halloween Bertram hosts Main Street Halloween, sponsored by the City of Bertram and supported by businesses, the Chamber of Commerce and the Library. The Fire and Police Department and City Workers provide barricades to completely block off Vaughan Street from East to Lampasas, and children and families are safe to enjoy “tricking and treating” and various games and fun houses. It’s not just the kids that have fun; you’ll see many adult “kids” decked out in costume, enjoying good times.
In November, on the Saturday before Veterans’ Day, Bertram hosts a parade honoring our servicemen. Citizens line Vaughan Street, and many of Bertram’s organizations as well as politicians and businesses join with Vets to march in the parade. Everyone is welcome to participate.
Bertram’s Community Thanksgiving Service
Each November, on the Sunday before Thanksgiving, the community comes together for Bertram’s Community Thanksgiving Service at Bertram Elementary Cafetorium at 6:00 p.m. Local churches put together a faith-based program, which includes music from various church choirs and groups. During the program an offering of money and food is gathered, which benefits the local food pantry. After, everyone enjoys fellowship and a finger-food buffet.
